Annual Meeting of the OISEVI Data Committee in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

On 20, 21 and 22 May 2026, the Annual Meeting of National Coordinators of the Road Crash Data Committee of the Ibero-American Road Safety Observatory (OISEVI), organised by the National Institute of Traffic and Land Transport (INTRANT) and the Ibero-American Road Safety Programme.

The main objective of the meeting was to strengthen technical cooperation between national road safety data authorities in the region, to make progress in harmonising methodologies and indicators, and to improve the quality and comparability of road accident data in Ibero-America. It also promoted the exchange of experiences and best practices to reinforce the use of statistical evidence in the design and evaluation of public road safety policies.

The meeting began on 20 May with an open forum on road safety organised by the host country at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attended by government representatives and civil society stakeholders.

During the technical sessions, held on 21 and 22 May, participants included representatives from national road safety agencies, heads of observatories and information systems from OISEVI member countries, as well as experts from international organisations such as the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).

The panel discussions, working groups and technical sessions addressed the following topics:

  • The value of statistical data in road safety policies.
  • Parameters and methodologies for the collection of road crash data.
  • Presentation of progress on the Ibero-American Road Safety Report and the status of microdata and KPI indicator collection.
  • National experiences in the submission and validation of road safety data.
  • Data and performance indicators dynamization.
  • Definition of standard indicators of the severity of road traffic injuries in the Americas.
  • Outcome indicators relating to serious injuries (MAIS3+). 
  • Information systems and improved data interoperability.
  • Microdata quality and strengthening of validation processes.
  • Key performance indicators (KPIs) for monitoring road safety policies.
  • Identification of best practices in traffic management and road safety. 
  • Identification of best practices for preventing motorcycle crashes.

The meeting concluded with a session dedicated to the future of the OISEVI Data Committee, during which the participating countries reaffirmed their commitment to the continuous improvement of information systems, the strengthening of regional technical cooperation and the development of common indicators to enable a more accurate assessment of progress in road safety in Ibero-America.
